In this episode, Radio Dwarka invited Dr Ashu Gupta to know how she stumbled into dentistry, and how she balances her family and career.
"I come from a small town in Uttar Pradesh. My father always wanted his son to be an engineer and daughter to be a doctor. I cleared CPMT and joined KGMC, Lucknow, in 1990 from where I did BDS and MDS," she says.
She got married to a psychiatrist in 2000 and moved to the UK, but returned after a couple of years as there were not enough career opportunities for her there. "My mother-in-law is a science graduate from Delhi University, and father-in-law is an engineer, so they always understood and valued my education and encouraged me to pursue by career," she says.
Her only child Tejas has adjusted well to her routine but craves for more attention. She tries and spends as much time is possible with him so that he doesn't feel neglected.
"Satisfaction is a vague feeling. One seldom has any moment of satisfaction in life, and my case is no different. It is natural to feel dissatisfied for a fraction of a second, but then I am happy to be where I am and what I am doing," she says.
Dr Gupta is a paediatric dentist and runs a clinic in Sector 17, Dwarka. "It is a heartening feeling when children come happily to my clinic for treatment, hug me and give me flowers. That itself is a huge compliment knowing that I extract teeth and give them pain, but still their smile seems to wash off all my sin. I feel overwhelmed by the unconditional love and affection of my little patients," she says with a chuckle.
