Language gives us our identity, says Bhojpuri scholar Dr Sarita Boodhoo

On the eve of the International Mother Language Day, listen to Dr Sarita Boodhoo, Chairperson, Bhojpuri Speaking Union, Mauritius, to know how the language of the land is making waves on the foreign shores.
Boodhoo runs a movement in Mauritius to give a global status to Bhojpuri. She established the Mauritius Bhojpuri Institute in 1982 in the multilingual country. As a result, the government formed the Bhojpuri Speaking Union in 2012 by passing a law in the Parliament and made her the head. Recently, a literary meet was also held in Mauritius.
She has also written many books for the language on the grassroots, academic, and international relations levels to popularise the language. Thanks to her efforts, Geet-Gawai, Bhojpuri song traditions propagated by Indians settled in Mauritius, become a part of UNESCO heritage.
She reiterated that our language gives us our identity and one must make ample effort to preserve it.
