Tazurba | KN Singh | Abling the differently abled

In this episode, Radio Dwarka invited KN Singh, a former government servant, to its studio for a freewheeling chat.
He migrated from Pakistan, from Rawalpindi to Meerut, post-partition, and completed his education at the Delhi University. After this, he joined defence services in the accounts department and recently retired after spending 39 years in government service.
His wife is a former banker, who also retired from service recently.
His elder child Simran, 36, is suffering from cerebral palsy and is bound to the wheelchair. "Two days after she was born, the doctor informed me that she would be physically challenged. It was difficult but yes, she is a brave child and in no way less abled than any healthy child."
There is no cure for it; physiotherapy is painful but the only way to ease patients like her of muscular stiffness, he said.
His second child is 20 years and, currently, studying in Class 10.
"There was no hierarchy. I was a Section Officer but my Secretary level officer treated me with a lot of affection. They used to call me KN and treated me with a lot of respect," he said.
He told that such children are gifted ones. "It is an intelligent brain in a disobedient body."
To help such children, he has formed a Handicapped Children's Parents Association in Sector 5, Dwarka. He also runs the Sneh Kunj Home for Palsy to take care of such differently abled children.
"There are six of them in life-care service; 32 others come for four hours. The staff, whom I call their local guardian, take care of them throughout. We have a proper hostel facility, attendant, cook, maid, staff, etc., to take care of them."
He said that such children need to feel that there is nothing abnormal about them. "They need to feel that they are a part of the society. They are regular with school and never like to miss even a day at school.
They come here, talk and share with each other and with us."
As a parent and an active social activist, he said, "They don't need sympathy. They need additional assistance, unlike you and me. Don't sympathise with them."
He regretted the fact that CSR doesn't yield money either. It is only for specific activities. "We are doing our bit of arranging funds. Or parents have to bear the expenses. Resource generation is quite a task."
However, he said that the Government Department's apathy is appalling.
"These people are a part of our society. Let's make a concerted effort to make them feel like one."
He had a piece of invaluable advice for those who are well past their prime, and ready to start their second innings: "If you are retired, do your bit in giving back to the society, come forward and make your life meaningful in the second innings, spend some time with these children. They will add a lot of value to your life."
