Tazurba | Babu Ram Thakur | Yoga helps to stay hale and hearty
In this episode, yoga expert Babu Ram Thakur shares his life's experiences with Radio Dwarka's listeners.
Born in a poor family in 1943 in a small village in Himachal Pradesh, Thakur bagged government's meritorious scholarship when he was in Class 4. He completed his matriculation at the age of 16 and joined the defence services when he was 18 as his family had limited means and there was no earning member to fend for them. His first posting was in Sikkim and from there, Thakur served in Dhaka for five years; he was posted in Delhi for the maximum period of his service. He retired in 2003 after being in the defence services for 45 years. "It was an active and satisfying time while I was in the defence services. I have served in the forces and various defence organisations. But I can proudly say that I never misused my designation or used official resources for my personal use."
His family is settled in Delhi. "My son is a hotel management graduate and currently employed as General Manager at a five-star hotel here."
A Yoga enthusiast, he says that it helps remain hale and hearty. "I was suffering from osteoporosis when I was in Class 4. It was a debilitating health condition. I tried every form of treatment, but nothing helped. One day, my wife took me to a Yoga class, and that is how I was initiated into Yoga. Over the years, I have mastered it. I have been practising it daily without fail."
He urged people to practice Yoga daily, but always under the watchful eyes of an experienced teacher to reap maximum benefits from this form of exercise. "There are certain nuances in Yoga which only a trained teacher can tell."
Most of the Yoga volunteers associated with his organisation (Bharatiya Jan Sansthan) try and serve the society out of concern for health and well-being of people who want to benefit from it. "Their service is free of cost." He shared his number (9868894531) so that anyone in need could get in touch and seek help from him.
